R.P.H. (Bob) Chang studied Physics at MIT and Astrophysics at Princeton. He spent fifteen years performing basic research at the prestigious Bell Labs before joining Northwestern University as a professor of Materials Science and Engineering and Electrical Engineering in 1986. He has over twenty-five years of experience teaching integrated STEM topics to graduates and undergraduates. His current research interests include nanostructured materials, nanophotonics, and advanced solar cell development.

Prof. Chang's groundbreaking STEM education projects include the Materials World Modules, the NSF National Center for Learning and Teaching in Nanoscale Science and Engineering (NCLT) and the first Research Experiences for Teachers (RET) program, which the National Science Foundation subsequently adopted as a foundation-wide program to enhance STEM education. In 2005, he was honored with the NSF Director's Distinguished Teaching Scholar Award for his contributions to materials research and education.

Prof. Chang is the Founding President and General Secretary of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS), which has thirteen adhering bodies on five continents and is a member of ICSU. He is a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society and the Materials Research Society, and a regular adviser to government agencies, universities and research institutes around the world.
